Today we hit up Mission Trails for one of it’s more challenging hikes. Kwaay Paay Peak Trail is 2.4 miles long with elevation gains 875 feet. This short and dirty San Diego area hike is labeled difficult on All Trails. My kids would definitely agree with that, however I would say for the reasonably in shape it isn’t bad at all.
There is currently construction going on near the entrance and signs warn the trail may close during the construction period, so keep that in mind if you’re venturing out.
Like so many hikes in this area, this one has little in the way of shade and being inland, it’s hot and sunny this time of year. The trail itself is rocky and a bit uneven, but not too terribly steep. Bring plenty of water and like these guys - don’t be afraid to take breaks.
I’ll admit I hear a good bit of grumbling on the way up…but we did play the alphabet greeting game as we went along, which helped to distract a bit. We saw one other group with kids on this trail, but mostly single trail runners or those out for a good workout.

The views are beautiful, especially as you get higher up. The toughest part of the hike is
the last .3 miles, where it climbs at a good clip. There are steps which make it easier to manage.
A good break at the top puts it all in perspective and the boys were proud of themselves. You can see gorgeous views of San Diego, stretching all the way to the ocean.
The way down the boys definitely managed faster than me. At the end they said the hike was hard, but good. But not to count on them doing it again.
Good thing I have plenty of other hikes in my pocket for next time.
